Today and Tomorrow

This entry will include stuff about today and about tomorrow.  Read carefully!

TODAY: We were in the LRC and you worked with your paper.  Please be ready by FRIDAY with a print out of your paper so we can have editing sessions in class.

THURSDAY:

  • TURNITIN.COM.  Go to turnitin.com and open our blog in different windows.  You need to create an account.  Click CREATE AN ACCOUNT on the main page (next to the blue login button).  Enter an email to login with and a password to login with and select STUDENT at the bottom of the page.  On the next page you will have to enter our Class ID # 9603433 and the class password ehle13 as well as the other information it asks you to enter.  Once you have created an account it will take you to A Period Literature.  IN ORDER TO SUBMIT YOUR PAPER ON MONDAY: Click on A Period Literature and click on the assignment OF MICE AND MEN.  On the next page you will select SUBMIT SINGLE UPLOAD.  Give your paper a name and enter your first and last name (NOT an alias).  Search for your paper (on your computer, google doc, etc.--use the option of where you have yours saved).  CLICK SUBMIT.  Make sure you have gone through all of the steps and the computer will tell you "YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY UPLOADED".  If you are getting an error message or want to double check with me that it uploaded, please email me and I can check from my teacher-side.

  • DIRECTLY QUOTING MATERIAL and PUNCTUATING CITATIONS: A big mistake I am seeing is the direct quoting of dialogue in your paper.  If George use dialogue to tell Lennie something and you want to directly quote what George is saying you must use the Quote within a Quote method.  Here is an example"
    • In the story Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie were great friends.  George wanted Lennie to be happy, even though sometimes George was short with Lennie.  George often gave Lennie a hard time.  " 'Lennie!  Shut up!  You always talk about ketchup!  We don't have ketchup' " (46). Later, George apologizes for being mean and he decides to do what he can to get Lennie ketchup in the future.  " ' Aw, Lennie, I am so sorry.  I did not mean what I said.  When we get our own place, I will get you all the ketchup you want' " (50).
    • Please pay close attention to the punctuation used when directly quoting dialogue.  Also, pay close attention to punctuating the citation!
  • EASYBIB.COM: Make sure you use easybib.com to make the Work Cited page.  Remember the format. And remember that the Work Cited page is a SEPARATE page!  It does not go at the bottom of your last essay page because you have space.  SEPARATE page for the Word Cited page.
HOMEWORK:
FRIDAY you must have a typed copy in class so that we can have our last editing session and so you can ask your last questions of me before coming in on Monday.  If you do not have a completed rough draft with work cited page tomorrow you will receive a ZERO!

MONDAY: you need your A HARD COPY of your FINAL DRAFT.  Your submission to turnitin.com is due by midnight Monday night.

Conclusions/Citation Generator and Reading

Today I went over conclusions and how to use the online citation generator to create your Work Cited Page for your Of Mice and Men paper.

Then you were to read F451 Part 3 up through the line "The house was silent" (page 123ish).
After reading create 10 short answer questions and provide the answers (short answer = one word or one sentence).  This will be due on Friday.

Tomorrow and Thursday we will be in the computer lab. I will show you how to work with Turnitin.com.  On Friday we will have an in-class editing session.  You will have to submit your papers to Turnitin.com as well as a hard copy to me on Monday, March 2nd.

Our classroom's enrollment ID is 9603450 and the password is ehle13.  This will make more sense tomorrow.

HOMEWORK:
Make sure you complete the reading and assignment for F451 by Friday.

Today we began the hour by taking a quiz on Fahrenheit 451.

Computer Lab Time

Today I handed back your outline with a grade on it.  Some of you did not follow the specific directions I set out for you.  (Please see blog entry http://aperiodlit.blogspot.com/2015/02/outlining-body-paragraphs.html again).

With your already handwritten introduction and your outline of your body paragraphs, you were to start typing your paper.  You began with an MLA heading left justified (Name, Teacher, Class, Date) and then centered a title.

You had the entire time to type.  Thursday, you will finish drafting your essay (into-3rd body paragraph) and print a copy for a peer to edit.  Next Tuesday when we return from Winter Break will be your last day in the computer lab to tighten up your paper.  Your final paper will be due next Friday (2/27).

HOMEWORK:
Tomorrow you will have a short quiz over the reading from when we find out Clarisse is "dead" (page 40ish) until the end of part 2.
Please review the highlights from this portion of the book.

F451 Final Project, Computer Lab time, and continued reading

Today I began by discussing your final project for F451 and gave you a handout of choices.  YOU HAVE OPTIONS :)  Please read the information posted on Edline about the various project ideas.

I then collected your outlines for your Of Mice and Men Paper.  Many of you did not follow directions and will not receive all 5 points.

Wednesday we will have a quiz covering pages 40-end of part 2.  I will give you a slight insight into the quiz in tomorrow's blog entry.

Then we continued reading of the rest of the hour.  We read the beginning of part 3 up through "And he stumbled along the alley in the dark" (and it has a break in the page after it).

Fahrenheit 451 Final Project Options

Choose one of the following projects to work on individually or in a group (with no more than three members).  Remember to be creative but appropriate!

Each project must be neat and organized. Effort must be visible. The grade is based on creativity, neatness, accuracy, and effort. Writing
must be typed. Choose a project that appeals to your own personal talents and interests.

*There is a big difference between something you jot down in a few minutes and something you put time into.

PROJECT IDEAS ARE DUE TO MRS. EHLE NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, February 24.
FINAL DUE DATE: They will be due the day after we return from Spring Break, April 14th

I will mark you down on your paper if you only have quotes/paraphrases from the beginning of the book or from one single part of the book.

Then I let you continue to work on the questions from yesterday's assignment.  Please see yesterday's blog entry for the questions if you did not finish within the hour.  As you worked, I continued to work with individuals who needed help on their introductions.

HOMEWORK:

  • Complete the questions and reading (found on yesterday's blog entry)

Yesterday and Today

Yesterday I had you watch part of Truffaut's 1966 movie version of F451.

Today you worked independently on questions pertaining to the next reading in our book.  This work will be completed in class today and tomorrow and turned in on Thursday at the beginning of the hour.  You are to read until the end of chapter 2.

Here are the questions that should become TOMORROW NIGHT'S homework.  (Again, this is what you are working on in class tomorrow and I will need to talk with student's individually about their OMAM papers.)

Question for Fahreneheit 451 (until the end of part two—my page 106)

  1. What questions does Guy ask the two houseguests?
  2. What attitudes do the women (Mrs. Bowles and Mrs. Phelps) seem to have about the war, and about death, and about their husbands?
  3. How do the women react when Guy suggests, “Let’s talk”?
  4. What just-slightly-different attitudes do Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles express about having and raising children?
  5. What do the women say about the presidential candidates Hoag and Noble?
  6. When Guy brings in the book of poems and identifies it as a book of poetry, who whispers “Montag” in his ear, and why?
  7. When Guy challenges Mrs. Bowles’s assertion that she hates poetry by asking her “Have you ever heard any?” what does Faber say to Guy through the Seashell Radio earpiece?
  8. What does Mrs. Phelps say about what she wants Guy to do, and why does she suggest this?
  9. What poem does Guy read to them?
  10. How does Mrs. Phelps respond to the poem?
  11. What does Faber tell Guy about the intellectual journey Guy is on, and what will one day happen and what Guy will be able to look back on and know?
  12. What does Faber advise Guy he should feel towards those women (Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles)?
  13. What does Faber tell Guy when Guy has said that he’d made the women unhappy and perhaps they were right and it would be best to just not face things and only have fun?
  14. What odd thing does Beatty say to greet Guy when Guy arrives at the firehouse?
  15. What does Guy obediently do when Beatty puts his hand out, palm up, for a gift? And what does Beatty do with the gift?
  16. What does Beatty tell Guy about a dream he’d supposedly had during a catnap he’d had an hour ago, and what does Faber tell Guy through the earpiece that Beatty is trying to do?
  17. What does Beatty claim about how his alleged dream had supposedly ended?
  18. What does Faber tell Guy to remember about Captain Beatty, and the majority?
  19. When Guy almost makes the mistake of answering Faber out loud, what saves him?
  20. On the fire truck or ‘Salamander’ what does Guy think about that he’d done back at his house a few hours earlier that he now regrets?
  21. When the Salamander halts, in front of whose house have they stopped?

Continued reading and questions

Today I collected the reading logs and your intro paragraphs.

Next you worked in your literature circles to read the next section of material (pages 71-88ish)

Here are the questions that need answers BY MONDAY!

1.      Questions for pages 71(ish)- 88(ish) –Fahrenheit 451
  1. What does Guy remember when he’s trying to think of how he can possibly make sense of what he’s reading?
  2. Why do you think Faber trusted a fireman to know his home address, when that fireman clearly knows he has an illegal book hidden in his coat right at that moment, and can quote poetry?  In their brief interaction, what might have led Faber to believe he could trust Guy with that information?
  3. Why does Guy call Faber on a secondary phone instead of on the main phone line?
  4. When Guy tells Mildred that the Bible he has may be the last one left in this part of the world, what does she remind him about?
  5. What does Guy think is the only thing left for him to do?
  6. What does Guy ask Mildred about her ‘family’ of characters on television, and what is her reply?
  7. How does Faber look and act when Guy first shows up at his door, and when, why, and how does his behavior change?
  8. What does Faber tell Guy about his regrets from the past?
  9. What does Faber tell Guy about books and about what Guy really needs?
  10. What does Faber tell Guy about good writers, mediocre writers, and bad writers?
  11. When Guy tells Faber his idea of getting a printing press and printing extra copies of books, how does Faber respond, and why? What twist does Faber suggest to Guy’s plan?
  12. Faber suggests they could harness the rage of actors who no longer get to perform Shakespeare, etc., and historians who haven’t written a line for forty years, and they could form classes in thinking and reading, but then says this would only ‘nibble the edges’ of society.  What does Faber say about how often the firemen are necessary, and why this is the case?
  13. What does Faber show Guy he has invented?  What does it do, and how does Faber seem to hope to be able to use it?
(I realized the sheet you had in class had the questions out of order.  I have given them to you hear in order they appear in the book.  Sorry for the confusion).
